How to free up disk space on your Rok Box

Occasionally, you may find that your primary disk drive in your Rok Box (referred to as the C: drive) is running low on disk space.

It is generally suggested to keep at least 20% of the total size of your primary drive free, as Windows uses this space for temporary and swap file storage. If your drive has less free space than this, you may experience system issues such as crashes or applications not being able to launch

As such, it is good practice to occasionally clean up and maintain your primary drive.

The best practices to do to clean up space on your drive are as follows:

1. Run Disk Cleanup. Click Start, type: Disk Cleanup, and then select the option to "Run as administrator".

2. Select disk c: as the disk which you wish to cleanup, and after the scan, tick the checkbox next to all items listed. Then click OK and let the cleanup run.

3. Check your downloads folder for old or no longer needed files which you can delete.

4. Use an application like Treesize Free: https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free to scan your drive for files which you can potentially move or delete, which may be taking up excessive space on your drive which can be moved to another drive.

6. Delete the content of the TEMP folders in Windows. To do this:

- Open a file explorer window (the yellow folder icon which allows you to browse files on your system).
- In the location box (showing the current location in which you are on your drive), type: %temp% -- hit enter.
- You'll be taken to the temp folder on your drive -- select all files in this folder, and then delete.
- You may be prompted that some files cannot be deleted as they are in use. If this happens, tick the box next to "Do this for all files", and then click "skip".

Now, clean out the Windows temp folder, which is found at c:\Windows\temp

Navigate into that folder via the Windows file explorer, select all files, and delete. If prompted that files are in use, repeat the process of clicking "Do this for all files", and then click "skip".

When this process is done, empty your recycle bin.

Optionally, you may clean the WinSXS folder, which stores update data from Windows Update which may not be needed.

To do that, follow instructions found here

Once these operations are complete, reboot your Rok Box and check your overall disk space.

You may also wish to check that sample libraries for third-party plugins haven't been installed onto your primary drive, as they should be installed onto your Samples drive.

If that is the case, you'll want to locate those sample libraries, usually found in your My Documents folder, and move them to your Samples drive.

Please note that you may need to relink these libraries in applications such as Kontakt, Omnisphere, and other applications, should you move those files.
